Tuesday, April 6, 2004 -- Day 6

Today I got up a little after 5:00 a.m. and was at the gym by 6:00 for my usual 25 minutes on the Life Cycle. It’s a great piece of equipment! I got home just in time for my 6:45 radio interview with The Man Cow Show which is syndicated in various cities located in AZ, CA, GA, IA, IL, MA, MD, MI, MO, RI, TN and VA.

  • Meal #21 – 0730 hrs: I started my morning off with a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit [460 cal., 21 g. protein, 32 g. carbs, 28 g. total fat], Sausage Biscuit with Egg [490 cal., 16 g. protein, 31 g. carbs, 33 g. total fat], Scrambled Eggs [160 cal., 13 g. protein, 1 g. carbs, 11 g. total fat] and a small black coffee.

I had another radio interview at 4:15. This time with a station in Greenbay, Wisconsin called KICKS 104.9 (WPCK). I met up with my training partner at 5:30 where I spent the next 50 minutes on my leg workout. On my way home I stopped and got a much needed haircut.

Additional Comments: My energy is normal and I’m feeling great. I’m looking forward to the next 24 days! It’s been great that there has been so much attention on the 30 Day McDonald’s Diet. The positive responses I keep receiving have been wonderful. They really help to fuel my fire to get the education about health and fitness out to the general public through example.

At 7:00 I was interviewed by Star Radio in Las Vegas. I went back to the gym at 7:30 for my chest workout which lasted an hour and a half. Since we’re filming for a documentary it took longer than normal.

Additional Comments:
Today was an exciting day. We got the release to film at the 24 Hour Fitness that I work out at. And I was contacted by our local television station in Orange County on Channel 3 to do my first television appearance interview on Monday, April 12th. Television is just one more way to reach the public in order to promote health and fitness.

The large French Fry I had today was really hard to eat. There was just so much. It’s the first time I had difficulty finishing the entire meal. It amazes me how people can actually eat that amount of French Fry’s. The Supersize French Fry will definitely be a challenge. But I said I would eat everything on the menu at least once so bring it on!

Thursday, April 8, 2004 -- Day 8

I woke up during the night hungry for the first time, got myself a glass of water and went back to bed. Springing out of bed at my normal time, which is 5 a.m., I was at the gym by 5:30 and pumping out 25 minutes of cardio on the Life Cycle, followed by 10 minutes of resistance training on my calves. Since I was so hungry during the night I had to stop my work out early to get a much needed breakfast at McDonalds. So far, the experience at all the McDonald’s that I’ve visited has been wonderful - the employees & management have been terrific and the food very tasty.

  • Meal 30 - 0710 hrs: I started this morning out with Hot Cakes & Sausage [780 cal., 15 g. protein, 104 g. carbs, 33 g. total fat], 2 Scrambled Eggs [320 cal., 26 g. protein, 2 g. carbs, 22 g. total fat] and a Large Coffee.
  • Meal 31 - 1107 hrs: Next I tackled a Big Mac [600 cal., 25 g. protein, 50 g. carbs, 33 g. total fat], Cheeseburger [330 cal., 15 g. protein, 36 g. carbs, 14 g. total fat], Oatmeal Raisin Cookie [150 cal., 2 g. protein, 23 g. carbs, 6 g. total fat] and a Diet Coke.
  • Meal 32 - 1448 hrs: For my third meal of the day I had a Big N’ Tasty with Cheese [590 cal., 27 g. protein, 39 g. carbs, 36 g. total fat], Fruit N’ Walnut Salad (without walnuts) [170 cal., 2 g. protein, 38 g. carbs, 1 g. total fat] and a Diet Coke.

At 3:30 pm I stopped by the ThinkCorporate office in Newport Beach. They’re donating their time and effort to create and maintain the website for Truth In Fitness. They are currently in the process of changing the look of the website in order to enhance it for more pleasurable viewing. Once completed the site will look incredible. They are also adding a four minute video clip of the documentary that’s being filmed to the website.

I made my way back to the gym at 6 p.m. for a 45 minute back workout. I was a little tired at this workout but I was able to maintain my reps and weight for the entire training session.

  • Meal 33 - 1913 hrs: And for my final meal of the day I had Chicken McNuggets (6 piece) [250 cal., 15 g. protein, 15 g. carbs, 15 g. total fat], Filet-O-Fish [410 cal., 15 g. protein, 41 g. carbs, 20 g. total fat] and a Diet Coke.

Additional Comments: My normal workout routine is usually completed in the mornings. However, with the disruption in my schedule due to this project I am having to split it up almost daily. I’m dedicated to this project and will do whatever it takes ethically to complete it - even if that means going to the gym twice a day.

Friday, April 9, 2004 -- Day 9
Well, today started off slow. My alarm went off a 5 am, however I fell back asleep until 5:30. It was too late to go to the gym for my cardio training because I was scheduled for a 6:10 phone interview with Joe and the Poor Boy at WKQZ in Flint Michigan. We were scheduled to film at the gym for the documentary at 11:00, so after the interview I headed for McDonald’s for my first meal of the day.
  • Meal #34 - 0640 hrs: The first meal of the day consisted of Hot Cakes & Sausage [780 cal., 15 g. protein, 104 g. carbs, 33 g. total fat], Egg McMuffin [300 cal., 18 g. protein, 29 g. carbs, 12 g. total fat], Scrambled Eggs [160 cal., 13 g. protein, 1 g. carbs, 11 g. total fat] and a small black coffee [0 Cal.].
  • Meal #34.1 - Snack - 0959 hrs: I needed a little more food before I went to the gym so I stopped and grabbed a Fruit N’ Yogurt Parfait (snack size) [160 cal., 4 g. protein, 30 g. carbs, 2 g. total fat].

The film crew and I arrived at the gym a little before 11:00. After releases were signed by the film crew we were off to train shoulders and triceps as the cameras followed. We were lucky enough to get interviews from other gym members regarding “The McDonald’s Diet”. Because of the filming this workout lasted approximately one hour.

  • Meal #35 - 1233 hrs: After my workout I stopped and got a Filet-O-Fish [410 cal., 15 g. protein, 41 g. carbs, 20 g. total fat], Quarter Pounder with Chese [540 cal., 29 g. protein, 39 g. carbs, 29 g. total fat], and a Diet Coke.

Since I missed my cardio session this morning I went back to the gym at 4:00 to complete it, lasting 30 minutes.

  • Meal #36 - 1703 hrs: Halfway into my day I got a McChicken Sandwich [430 cal., 14 g. protein, 41 g. carbs, 23 g. total fat], Double Cheeseburger [490 cal., 25 g. protein, 38 g. carbs, 26 g. total fat] and another Fruit N’ Yogurt Parfait (snack size) [160 cal., 4 g. protein, 30 g. carbs, 2 g. total fat].
  • Meal #37 - 2035 hrs: And for my last meal of the day I had a Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad [200 cal., 29 g. protein, 9 g. carbs, 6 g. total fat], the almighty Super Size Fries [610 cal., 9 g. protein, 77 g. carbs, 29 g. total fat] and a Diet Coke.

Additional Comments: Calculating Fat - As I enter Day 9 of “The McDonald’s Diet” I thought it might be interesting to calculate the amount of fat I would have added to my body if I had not been exercising. My daily calorie needs, without exercising, is approximately 2100 calories. Now, in the past 8 days I’ve consumed 28,965 calories, which is 12,145 more than my body needs without exercising. That difference would equal between 3.5 & 4 lbs. of body fat that I would now have gained. If I were to keep this scenario up, I will have gained approximately 15 lbs. of body fat, at the end of the 30 days. It’s easier to put on body fat than it is to take it off.

Saturday, April 10, 2004 -- Day 10
I woke up at 6:00 am for a 30 minute drive to the gym in Aliso Viejo, helping a friend of mine with his continued fat loss. In the past four months he’s lost over 30 pounds of body fat by just following the fundamental principals of nutrition and exercise. I arrived 30 minutes before he did in order to get my cardio training in. I have him completing his cardio work after his training in order to maximize his resistance training energy. My friend arrived and we trained legs for 45 minutes leaving me barely walking. Afterwards I headed towards home to my local McDonald’s and a much needed first meal of the day.
  • Meal #38 - 0916 hrs: I started this morning out with Hot Cakes & Sausage [780 cal., 15 g. protein, 104 g. carbs, 33 g. total fat], 2 Scrambled Eggs [320 cal., 26 g. protein, 2 g. carbs, 22 g. total fat] and a Small Coffee.

After the hectic week I took a nap for an hour.

  • Meal #39 - 1131 hrs: Quarter Pounder with Cheese [530 cal., 28 g. protein, 38 g. carbs, 30g. total fat], Hamburger [280 cal., 12 g. protein, 35 g. carbs, 10 g. total fat], Oreo McFlurry (12 oz) [570 cal., 15 g. protein, 82 g. carbs, 20 g. total fat] and a Small Diet Coke.
  • Meal #40 - 1611 hrs: Chicken McNuggets (6 piece) [310 cal., 15 g. protein, 18 g. carbs, 20 g. total fat], Grilled Chicken Caeser Salad [210 cal., 26 g. protein, 11 g. carbs, 7 g. total fat], Caramel Sundae [360 cal., 7 g. protein, 61 g. carbs, 10 g. total fat] and a Small Diet Coke.

I received a few emails from the folks in Ireland in regards to the pending Fat Tax that is to be placed on fast food there. I spent the next hour receiving and answering emails.

  • Meal #41 – 1945 hrs: Double Cheeseburger [480 cal., 25 g. protein, 37 g. carbs, 27 g. total fat], California Cobb Salad with Crispy Chicken [380 cal., 27 g. protein, 20 g. carbs, 23 g. total fat], Hot Fudge Sundae [340 cal., 8 g. protein, 52 g. carbs, 12 g. total fat] and a Small Diet Coke.

Additional Comments: I must say that I really like the salads that McDonald’s has to offer. Besides giving the diner a healthier choice alternative (as long as they go easy on the dressing) they taste great. I can actually add them to my regular eating after these 30 days are up and know that I have another option especially when traveling.

Due to time constraints we have decided to post each day’s journal the following day.
